ESPRIT-AI
Technological solutions for falls and pressure injuries
The Bruyère Health Innovation Team partnered with Esprit-ai to tackle the issues of falls and pressure injuries among long-term care residents.
Falls affect 20 to 30 percent of older Canadians each year, according to a study published by the Public Health Agency of Canada. These often lead to hospitalization or long-term disability.
Meanwhile, a recent report by the Canadian Institute for Health Information found that pressure injuries affect about 26 percent of patients and residents across various health care sectors.
As part of a pilot project, Esprit-ai sensors were placed under the mattresses of Bruyère Health Saint-Louis Long-Term Care residents who had been identified as high-risk for falls and pressure injuries.
The sensors sent alerts to handheld devices, notifying Personal Care Assistants (PCAs) when a resident had left their bed or when they were due for repositioning.
A survey conducted with personal care attendants after the pilot found . . .

-
91 percent adhered to repositioning residents after receiving alerts
-
64 percent felt alerts were useful in responding promptly to bed exits
-
