Increasing team resilience and wellbeing with AIR Institutes and Shannex
The challenge
Health care workers are facing high rates of burnout and other mental health-related challenges: resulting in an increasing number of mental health leaves and worsening staff shortages in the sector.

To address this challenge, Shannex (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Ontario) connected with the CAN Health Network to seek a solution that could increase mental health resilience among their team members and support stress management – improving staff wellbeing and reducing the number and duration of mental health leaves. Specifically, Shannex sought a solution that offered online resilience training and 1:1 coaching sessions to ensure the services were accessible to teams in all regions.
The solution
The Atlantic Institute for Resilience (AIR)'s groundbreaking internet-based Resilience Training (iRT) platform empowers employees to manage their mental well-being effectively and proactively, preventing challenges from escalating into more severe mental health issues. AIR provides a resilience assessment to each employee and details next steps and individualized recommendations for coaching. Employees can then access up to 3 months of online 1:1 coaching (depending on need) to develop the skills necessary to recover from stress, harness emotional wellbeing, and strengthen workplace relationships: empowering employees to stay at or return to work.

After implementing AIR, Shannex found:

-
A 22% increase in resilience scores among staff who completed the program.
-
95% of participants reported that the program taught them skills helpful for managing stressful situations.
-
Participants spent an average of 9.2 hours in the iRT platform.
-
A 53% reduction in the length of mental health leaves during the project, compared to data from prior to implementation.
-
50% of program participants reported a reduced risk of taking leave in the next 6 months, following program completion.
-
86% of members of the occupational health team reported that AIR was an improvement over their previous approach to managing employee leave.
The benefits
Through their implementation of AIR, Shannex was able to increase their employees’ mental health resilience and decrease the duration of mental health leaves – improving employee wellbeing and preventing staffing shortages. AIR’s flexible, online mode of delivery makes it accessible to individuals in any region.
