Improving Resident Safety and Staff Efficiency with a Wearable Real-Time Location System (RTLS)
The challenge
Long-term care (LTC) homes manage multiple, interconnected challenges, from preventing falls and wandering to protecting staff and responding quickly when residents need assistance. These needs are often addressed through separate technologies that can add complexity to already demanding staff workflows.
At the same time, chronic staffing pressures make it increasingly important for technology to augment the work of care teams, helping staff focus their time and attention where they are needed most.
Many traditional safety systems are also reactive, alerting staff only after an event has occurred. LTC homes need greater visibility into resident location, movement and changing patterns so teams can identify potential risks sooner and respond more proactively.
To address these challenges, Shannex and Bruyère Health approached CAN Health seeking a modern, integrated, cost-effective solution that could meet the safety needs of residents and staff while improving staffing efficiency—now and into the future.
The solution
Tenera Care's innovative wearable-based RTLS (real-time location system) with integrated call buttons for residents, staff, and visitors, provides precise, real-time location and movement intelligence across the community. The platform monitors behavioural trends and generates automated alerts for risks such as elopement, nocturnal waking, hostile interactions, and staff emergencies.

Tenera gives care teams greater visibility into where residents and staff are, where assistance may be needed and when patterns begin to change. This intelligence also helps augment staff capacity. Rather than relying solely on routine rounds, manual observation or multiple disconnected systems, staff can use real-time alerts and insights to prioritize, respond more efficiently and focus on direct resident care.
By providing high-quality data through one streamlined system, Tenera Care supports safer residents, more empowered staff and more targeted, responsive and well-documented care delivery.
Through CAN Health-supported projects with Shannex and Bruyère Health, Tenera Care demonstrated:
Bruyère Health
-
60% cost savings compared to alternative solutions
-
Location accuracy within 100 cm (46 cm Site A, 73 cm Site B)
-
9-12 month battery life
Shannex
-
70% of staff report Tenera meets or exceeds expectations compared to previous call bell systems
-
100% of residents wear the Tenera device throughout the day
The benefits
Tenera Care’s real-time monitoring capabilities ensure that alerts are promptly communicated to caregivers: enhancing safety and efficiency within care facilities and addressing potential incidents before they occur (i.e. falls, elopement).
